Dryer sheets ward off flies and mosquitoes, as reported in other articles, but they also may be harmful to pets, according to the ASPCA.

Some contain detergents "known as cationic's that have the potential to produce significant gastrointestinal irritation, particularly when the sheets haven't yet been used," says the ASPCA website.
Side effects include:
  • drooling
  • oral burns
  • appetite loss
  • occasionally ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract

Therefore, it's best not to put dryer sheets where pets can get to them or rub the sheets over their fur to make the hair lay down.  While dogs and other animals can also be affected, cats are especially sensitive to cationic's.
