Posted 05/11/12 -- Over the last three years, there have been no dog deaths in Alaska's Iditarod race, thanks in part to pre-race electro-cardiograms, which help veterinarians exclude dogs with weak hearts from the race. Some are advocating the use of cardiac evaluations for human athletes: A study in an American Heart Association journal reports that 1 in 44,000 NCAA athletes suffer sudden cardiac death each year, and one Swedish study found the risk to be 1 in 3,000 among Division l athletes.

Posted 05/11/12 -- I am wondering whether I can put an anti-itch cream like calamine lotion on my cat. For several years, she's had a persistent rash on her tummy that will not go away. The rash is caused by her excessive licking. She'll lick herself until she bleeds. She's had steroid shots and liquid oral steroids, and has been tested for fungal infections, pemphigus, and every other condition on the planet. She is currently on a veterinary-specific hypoallergenic diet.

Posted 05/03/12 -- Twenty-three horses died from botulism at Whistlin' Willow Farm in Maine, and officials think the cause was moist silage containing Clostridium botulinum, whose toxin can rapidly kill a horse. Officials are working to ensure the animal carcasses, which contain the toxin, do not contaminate the water table. Large-scale horse die-offs from botulism are rare but have occurred before in the U.S. and can be prevented by feeding appropriately stored feed and having horses vaccinated for botulism.

Cats and Stomatitis: A Condition You Wouldn't Wish on Your Worst Enemy

Posted 04/26/12 -- Stomatitis is a condition in which a cat's immune system inappropriately rejects the animal's teeth. Cats appear to react to the tooth roots themselves. However, many experts believe that a reaction to bacterial plaque may be a significant trigger. Some cases are linked to the feline leukemia virus, the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV, or feline AIDS), or calicivirus. Many cases, however, occur in cats not infected with any of these, and in most instances the cause is not determined.

Shedding hair is one of the biggest annoyances of dog and cat owners. So how can you rid your home and your clothing of unwanted hair? Regardless of age or breed, all dogs and cats (except for hairless pets like a Sphinx feline or an American Hairless Terrier) lose their winter coats and begin to shed when warmer weather arrives. While you can′t stop your pet from shedding, you can create an effective strategy to deal with the loose hair. If you are tired of tackling pet hair, use these fur fighting tips and pet product recommendations to alleviate shedding throughout your home:

Pet first aid can be a lifesaver

Posted 04/16/12 -- Knowing proper first aid techniques can decrease trauma and perhaps even save a pet's life, according to veterinarian Jim Clark. Aside from obvious emergencies, changes in a pet's heart rate, breathing or body temperature can be signs of a serious health problem. Owners should be aware of the normal values for a pet's vital signs so they can better identify a problem.

Posted 04/13/12 -- The warmer weather has veterinarians warning owners that fleas and ticks will be out in full force and can cause serious health problems for pets. The pests can suck enough blood, if their numbers are high enough, to make an animal anemic, and the saliva from even one flea can trigger an allergic reaction that involves the animal's entire skin.

Posted 04/13/12 -- Heatstroke can cause serious illness and even death in dogs, warns veterinarian Kim Donovan, and certain parameters can increase the likelihood of heatstroke, including being a brachycephalic breed, exercising in heat and being left in a parked car, even on a relatively cool day. Immersing an animal in cool water, rather than in freezing cold ice water, is the best means to quickly lower body temperature, but veterinary care should also be sought immediately.

When veterinarians diagnosed Blueberry, a 2-year-old Chihuahua, with atlantoaxial luxation and corresponding spinal cord hemorrhage, they knew the standard surgical treatments would be difficult given his tiny stature. Instead, they surgically placed a Kishigami atlantoaxial tension band, devised 25 years ago by a Japanese veterinarian but not often used. The technique proved to provide a near-perfect repair for Blueberry.

There are ways to cut the costs, experts say, including adopting pets from shelters and rescue groups that charge nominal fees and usually pay for neutering or spaying, first vaccinations and microchipping. Preventive care including regular dental cleanings can also help owners avoid higher costs later on. "Beyond the need to thoroughly clean tartar under the gum line, a full oral exam is necessary to identify damage to teeth or locate growths or tumors," says AVMA spokesman Michael San Filippo.

Owners are pushing for further action, and one owner-geared Facebook group on the issue gained 2,400 members in just one month. Newer tests, which are looking for heavy metal contaminants, are pending.
